OCD and the Family: Essential Strategies for Effective Treatment

January 20, 2017

  • Program Description

When obsessive-compulsive disorder shows up in a child, it’s very likely that other family members have it, too. OCD is the ultimate cult leader, often ruling families for generations. But how skilled are mental health and school-based professionals at recognizing the many manifestations of this disorder and then engaging the family in treatment?

This workshop will describe how to recognize OCD, the common pitfalls of treating OCD in kids, and active strategies to get families unstuck.

  • Objectives

Specialists will be better equipped to:

    • Recognize the patterns of OCD in order to decrease the chance of misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment

    • Create interventions that focus on interrupting the process of OCD in families rather than the content of the OCD

    • Communicate with parents and schools to enhance consistent responses to the child’s OCD

  • Speaker Bio

Lynn Lyons, LICSW, has been a psychotherapist for over 24 years and specializes in the treatment of anxious children and their parents, with a special interest in interrupting the generational pattern of worry in families.

She is the co-author with Reid Wilson of Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents: 7 Ways to Stop the Worry Cycle and Raise Courageous and Independent Children and the companion book Playing with Anxiety: Casey’s Guide for Teens and Kids and just released her third book, Using Hypnosis with Children: Creating and Designing Effective Interventions.

In addition to her private practice in Concord NH, she presents internationally to mental health and medical providers, educators, school nurses, and parents.
