Collaborative And Proactive Solutions: Advanced Training in Dr. Greene's Model For Understanding and Helping Behaviorally Challenging Kids

  • Program Description

    This training is for educators and mental health clinicians who have some existing familiarity with Dr. Greene's model and would like to increase their skills in their school, agency or private practice.

    The training makes extensive use of videotaped examples of key facets of the model and live demonstration.   It is conducted in a manner that provides maximum opportunities for questions, practice, interaction, and discussion.

  • Objectives

    Participants will be provided with in-depth coverage of various aspects of implementation in school and clinical settings, including:

    • identification of lagging skills and unsolved problems using the ALSUP

    • prioritizing unsolved problems

    • use of the Plans framework

    • skilled "drilling for information" to clarify concerns

    • dealing with roadblocks commonly encountered in implementation

    • what to do with kids who "won't talk"

    • strategies for "getting people on board" and "getting over the hump"

    • the sequence and process of change

  • Speaker Bio

    Ross W. Greene, Ph.D., is the originator of the Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) model, as articulated in his books The Explosive Child and Lost at School.  He is also the founding director of the non-profit Lives in the Balance, which aims to disseminate the CPS model through no-cost web-based programming and to advocate on behalf of behaviorally challenging kids and their parents, teachers, and other caregivers.
    Dr. Greene was on the faculty at Harvard Medical School for over 20 years, and is now adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Virginia Tech. Dr. Greene has authored numerous articles, chapters, and scientific papers on the effectiveness of the CPS model, the classification of and outcomes in youth with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges, and student-teacher compatibility.
    His research has been funded by, among others, the Stanley Research Institute, the National Institute on Drug Abuse/National Institutes of Mental Health, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Maine Juvenile Justice Advisory Group.
    Dr. Greene consults extensively to families, general and special education schools, inpatient and residential facilities, and systems of juvenile detention, and lectures widely throughout the world.

    Social Workers:

    Commonwealth Educational Seminars (CES), provider #1117 is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) through the Approval Continuing Education (ACE) Program. CES maintains responsibility for these programs. ASWB Approval Status: Active. Social workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval for continuing education credits. Social workers attending this program will receive 12 clinical continuing education clock hours.


    Commonwealth Educational Seminars (CES) is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to offer continuing education credit programs. CES maintains responsibility for these programs. Psychologists attending this program will receive 12 continuing education hours of credit


    As an APA approved provider, CES programs are accepted by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). These courses can be utilized by nurses to renew their certification and will be accepted by the ANCC. Every state Board of Nursing accepts ANCC approved programs except California and Iowa, however CES is also an approved Continuing Education provider by the California Board of Registered Nursing (Provider # CEP15567) which is also accepted by the Iowa Board of Nursing. Nurses attending this program will receive 12 hours of continuing education credit

    Speech and Language Pathologists:

    We are in the process of applying for ASHA certification. Until the approval is final we have been advised to give SLPs and Audiologists an ASHA “Verification of Attendance” form.

  • Cancellation Policy

    If you need to cancel your registration prior to the event, you will receive a credit towards any future workshop with us within 5 years.


    We must receive cancellation notice, credit will not be given if you do not cancel prior to the event.
